For Immediate Release
January 3, 2007

South Wedge, Rochester - Kurt Schweitzer of Urban Village Scooters has been chosen as the winner of the South Wedge Planning Committee's Business Plan Contest.

Urban Village Scooters is a new store front "boutique" offering scooters ranging from 50cc to 250cc. Perfect for inner-city and small town commuting, many of the 50cc models do not require a motorcycle license. The mission of Urban Village Scooters is to change the way we get around our city by providing a low cost, fuel efficient, eco-friendly transportation option.

Mr. Schweitzer's business plan faced strong competition. He plans on using the $1500 Grand Prize to help defray the start-up costs for the business. Urban Village Scooters, located at 700 South Clinton Avenue in the city's South Wedge Neighborhood, will be opening in the spring of 2007. The South Wedge Planning Committee would like to congratulate Kurt and thank everyone who submitted plans.

Kurt is a long-time member of Innovations Rochester, and editor of this blog.

This article at Entrepreneur.com, suggests a novel way to market small, inexpensive products. The profitability-to-hassle ratio of these items makes them difficult to market through normal sales channels. Retailers, for example, don't want to dedicate expensive display space to low-profit items. The answer: Fund-raisers. Not for you, the inventor or manufacturer. Rather for nonprofit organizations that sell your gadget to willing buyers who want to support their favorite museum, PTA, church or scout troop. Who has time for bake sales? Instead, let your local PTA sell your goods. This is a great thinking-outside-the-collection-bowl approach for both nonprofits and you. -- Gary Bogue

The D&C has published another article about Greg Tellex and Empire Golf Getaways. It appeared on the front page of the business section in the September 16 edition.

The article by Joy Davia tells how Greg turned his layoff from Xerox into an opportunity to build a new life as a golf tour provider. I'd like to link the article but D&C makes it hard to do. If you have a subscription to their archive you can read the article yourself.

The article dosen't mention Greg's connection with Innovations Rochester, just refers to unnamed local networking groups. Perhaps we should inform her about us.

Cartridge World, the largest retailer of cartridge refilling, services in the world, has opened its newest franchise location in Brighton. The store at Brighton-Tops Plaza,1900 Clinton Avenue South has brought the unique cartridge refilling concept to consumers and businesses in Brighton and the surrounding communities.

Consumers and businesses can drop off their cartridges for inkjet and laser printers, photocopy and fax machines to the Cartridge World store where they are refilled with knowledgeable and Fast customer service. This quick and easy cartridge refill service allows customers to refill their printer cartridges knowing that they are getting a refilled printer cartridge with a money back guarantee, for about half the cost of a new cartridge.

"People here realize that buying a new printer cartridge is neither cost effective nor environmentally friendly. The typical savings on our refill services is up to 50% of the retail price of a new cartridge and by recycling cartridges you can help protect our environment. Together, with these two strengths we look forward to serving the Brighton and surrounding communities," said Jim Moe, owner of the Brighton Cartridge World store.

Cartridge World was founded in South Australia in 1991. In addition to providing refill services, Cartridge World's more than 700 locations worldwide deal in compatible and original manufacturer cartridges for inkjet printers, laser printers, fax machines and photocopiers as well as specially papers. Cartridge World was recently named the No.1 Toner Replacement Service franchise for 2004 according to Entrepreneur Magazine.
