Event Submission Form

I've finally added an event submission form that can be used by visitors to the site to add their events to our catalog. It seems to work pretty well (at least to my mind) but I'm curious to see how the rest of the world views it.

Just so you know, submissions do not go directly onto the calendar. Instead they are posted in a draft mode, waiting for my approval. I will only approve those that seem to me to be of general interest to local entrepreneurs. (I am biased in favor of networking events and against technology events.)

Also note that there are limits on some of the fields. Titles, for instance, are limited to 40 characters, so that they don't overflow the space available for our weekly calendar. URLs are similarily limited to 100 characters. (I never really considered this to be a limit until I encountered a page in my testing that had a URL over 150 characters long. Why would anybody do that?)

One final note: Pressing the button on the form shows you a copy of your posting as it will appear on the site. You need to press the button on that second page in order for it to be submitted. Please take the time to proofread your submission before sending it on!

I hope you find this to be useful. I'm looking forward to lots of events appearing in our calendar!

A search engine for money

I attended a presentation last Friday at the Rochester Professional Consultants Network regarding sources of funding for training. It suggested a new idea that I'd like to explore.

Innovations Rochester has identified connecting new business owners with sources of money as a significant barrier to creating small businesses in the Rochester area. We are looking at the possibility of directly providing funding (through micro-loans modeled after the Grameen Bank ideas), but could also provide valuable assistance by simply helping entrepreneurs find people willing to fund their ideas.

It occurred to me that this is very similar to what a job bank does. Replace Job Seekers with Entrepreneurs, and Employers with Money Providers, and you'll start to see this picture:

It's basically a search engine for money. I'd appreciate any comments you might have about this idea, especially if you'd be willing to help out - either by helping write the software, or by identifying local funding sources and their criteria.

Your thoughts?

Business Start Up Checklist

This Business Start Up Checklist at Business Know-How is a good reminder of steps you need to go through to start your business, but misses a few things such as retaining an attorney and an accountant. Combine it with my previous post for a more complete list and a timeline to use as a guide.

Top Ten States for Small Businesses in 2005

Here's a blog article that made it into the national media. SurePayroll Announces Top Ten States for Small Businesses in 2005 contains state rankings that were mentioned on the radio today, mostly because New York was not in the list. I tracked it down simply so I could find out where I should be starting my next business.

What do you think of these rankings?

Money

Looking for money? Greater Rochester Enterprise has put together a list of funding sources for small businesses that you should probably investigate. Some day we'll put together a table comparing their funding criteria, but for now you'll just have to do your own research.

Good luck!
